Taos Art

Taos is a northern New Mexico town that is home to an estimated 88 galleries and 800 resident artists. A bastion of realistic, southwestern-style oil painters, Taos emerged as an art center in the early 1900s when artists dedicated to the academic standards of idealistic realism formed the Taos Society of Artists (often referred to as the"Taos Founders"). Mabel Dodge Lujan publicized the area's unique cultures (Pueblo, Anglo and Spanish) and its dramatic scenery, attracting to Taos a whole salon of writers, artists, art dealers and other precedent setters. The artists who started the Taos colony 90 years ago are still an inspiration to those who came later to live and work here.
