Who said schizophrenia can’t be fun?  McLaughlin’s  “Group Show” proves it to be so. There seems to  be numerous creators producing these works. But as the Germans say, “Erstens kommt es anders und zweitens als man denkt.” (First it turns out differently and secondly than you think.) Larry has been surprising us at Bareiss Gallery for over thirty years.

The tongue in cheek titled “Group Show” offers a diverse and broad mix of the abstract figurative work for which McLaughlin is known. It includes sculptures, paintings, monoprints, mobiles, stabiles, glass work, and nature-inspired forms, many as a restatement of McLaughlin’s traditional interest in the opaque and transparent.

McLaughlin continues to question traditional techniques and materials, but it’s his unique ideas that bring an artistic focus, however ironic, to his “found” objects, some of which are from nature and others from various cultural junk piles.

His work reflects a grand, but nonconformist, marriage of unorthodox materials. These sophisticated, anarchical, and sometimes gleeful constructions seem to mock tradition, reveling in the pleasures and the treasures of mortal life. The results transport us into a wonderland of fresh, irreverent, and ambitious exploration.

Oh, McLaughlin and his work are always fun; count on it.

McLaughlin lives and works in Phoenix, Arizona, and Neuilly-en-Sancerre, France. Born in Litchfield, Minnesota, McLaughlin studied at the University of California in Santa Cruz and the École Supérieure des Beaux Arts in Paris. His work is exhibited internationally and is in numerous permanent collections. www.LarryMcLaughlin.com or 602-790-0286.
